The first king he served was Aegon V Targaryen. After Lord Tywin resigned his position as Hand of the King, Aerys focused his paranoia on his heir Prince Rhaegar, who was weary of his father's behavior.

The court was divided between those loyal to the king and those loyal to the prince. Pycelle dispatched a letter to Oldtown, for the Citadel, writing that tensions and division at court strongly resembled those before the Dance of the Dragons, Pycelle was fearful of a civil war between those loyal to the king and those who supported Rhaegar would break out unless some accord could be reached that would satisfy both factions.

Pycelle urged Aerys to attend the Tourney at Harrenhal, warning him that Lord Walter Whent might have used this event to prepare a rebellion for Rhaegar.

Lord Owen Merryweather failed to prevent the insurrection and was exiled under the accusation of indirectly helping the rebels, and his successor Lord Jon Connington was exiled as well for failing to defeat Robert.

Pycelle was one of the few surviving people to know about Aerys' wildfire plot and after the Hand Lord Qarlton Chelsted was burned for opposing the plan and resign his position, the pyromance Wisdom Rossart became the new Hand.

After Prince Rhaegar's death and the destruction of most of the royal army at the Trident, the army of the westerlands marched to the gates of King's Landing before the rebels could.

It was Pycelle who urged and convinced Aerys to open the gates to Lord Tywin, hoping for Tywin to become king.

However Tywin wanted to please Robert, who had a stronger claim to the throne due to the Baratheons being cousins to the Targaryens. Pycelle's advice led to the Sack of King's Landing and the deaths of many, however it also caused Ser Jaime to betray and kill the king and his 3 main pyromancers, preventing the execution of the wildifre plot.

In the following years only 3 places with the king's wildfire have ben found: the dungeons of the Red Keep, the Dragon Pit, and the Great Sept of Baelor.

The rest remains lost and still underground. Pycelle is pardoned by Lord Robert Baratheon, just like the rest of the small council, the Lannisters, and the Merryweathers.

Since Robert was a poor ruler, Pycelle kept promoting the interest of House Lannister on the small council for years.

Pycelle often tends to blame Varys for all the bad things that happen at court, using the mistrust and fear that everyone has for the eunuch, often accusing Varys of being a sorcerer.

Tywin orders Tyrion to get rid of Lord Janos Slynt and test the loyalty of the remaining members of the small council, to avoid possible help for King Stannis or King Renly.

Tyrion does it by forging an alliance between House Lannister and House Martell, in which Pycelle is found treacherous. Tyrion removes him from his position and the small council and has him thrown in the black cells.

A short time later however, he's released but still stripped of his titles. After the Lannisters and the Tyrells defeat Stannis Baratheon at the Battle of the Blackwater, the Enclave of the Citadel sends a message to the court to make known their annoyance of the removal of Pycelle, because only the Enclave has the power and right to unmake Grand Maesters, unless they are guilty of a crime against the realm.

Pycelle is then also reinstated on the small council, since his actions were against the vengeful Martells and he was actually right since both Doran and Oberyn hate the Lannisters.

Pycelle helps Cersei and Tywin by supporting them at the trial of Tyrion Lannister, accused of killing Joffrey.

Pycelle and other 2 maesters help the court by confirming that Joffrey was indeed poisoned bt the Strangler. Following Tywin's death, the relationship between Pycelle and Queen Regent Cersei becomes more strained.

Cersei blames him for the bad state of Tywin's corpse actually a result from poisoned drink by Oberyn Martell and the death of the sick Lord Gyles Rosby.

Pycelle is also very angered by Cersei's decision: she creates chaos everywhere and he's bothered by Qyburn's presence on the small council, Cersei refusing to honor the debts owned to the Iron Bank of Braavos and the Faith, her decision to allow the Faith to re-institute the Faith Militant.

Cersei also deliberately damages the Lannister-Tyrell alliance, refusing the Tyrells to gather their fleets against King Euron Greyjoy , stating that King Stannis was the priority among their enemies.

After pressure from Cersei, Pycelle admits publicly to giving the 15 years old "virgin" Margaery moon tea, a contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy.

This discovery is crucial in Cersei's efforts to frame Margaery for adultery and treason, delivering her to the captivity of the High Septon.

Cersei considers replacing Pycelle. But she's arrested by the Faith, and Pycelle successfully seizes control of the small council, now able to decide himself who's going to rule the Seven Kingdoms for King Tommen.

Pycelle personally removes Ser Osfryd Kettleblack as commander of the City Watch so Osfyrd will not be able to use the Watch to try and free Cersei and his brother Osney, both of whom are prisoners of the Faith.

Pycelle dispatches a message to Ser Kevan Lannister offering him the regency. Lord Tyrell is angry at Pycelle for revealing Margaery requests for moon tea, ruining the official statements about her virginity and humiliating her in public.

Worried about his personal safety, Pycelle requests a guard from Ser Kevan. His argument does not convince Eddard.

Eddard also sends word to Casterly Rock , demanding that Tywin explain his bannerman's actions. Littlefinger and Pycelle object, but Eddard insists on seeking justice.

Pycelle tends to Robert after the latter is critically injured by a boar while hunting. He predicts the King's imminent death and manages his pain using milk of the poppy.

Following Robert's death, Eddard claims that Joffrey is not his son and is arrested for treason. Pycelle is present for the trial of Eddard on the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor.

He counsels mercy after Eddard's confession but Joffrey has Eddard executed. He muses about Joffrey's potential for greatness, but his remarks peter out into mumbled nothings.

Ros leaves and Pycelle does a series of exercises and stretches, then dresses and walks confidently to his door, before adopting the meek, fragile appearance he usually wears to court.

He is much stronger in body and mind than he appears, but hides this from everyone. Pycelle reports to the small council that the Conclave in Oldtown has announced the end of the longest summer in living memory and shows the white raven sent for this purpose.

Varys adds that the smallfolk say that a long summer will be followed by an even longer winter, which Pycelle dismisses as a peasant superstition.

Tyrion appears at a small council meeting to inform them that he has been made acting Hand of the King by his father.

Cersei angrily orders councilors to leave, Pycelle, along with Littlefinger, Varys, and Janos Slynt, abandon the room. In a later small council meeting, Cersei reads Robb's peace terms aloud to the small council before tearing them up.

Cersei asks Alton Lannister to deliver their reply and he accepts. Cersei also asks him to tell Jaime that he has not been forgotten, to the consternation of the other council members.

Pycelle reports a raven from Castle Black and gives its message to Tyrion. Tyrion says that the message is from Lord Commander Jeor Mormont and that he is asking for more men.

Cersei says that they cannot spare any because they are fighting their own war. Tyrion reads a troublesome passage: "the cold winds are rising, and the dead rise with them.

Tyrion meets with Pycelle in his dining room. He has complained of constipation and Pycelle gives him a vial of laxatives. Tyrion compliments that Maester's knowledge and then asks him to keep a confidence.

He tells him that he is hoping to make a marriage alliance with House Martell in Dorne by offering Myrcella 's hand to their heir Prince Trystane.

Tyrion specifies that Pycelle should not speak to the Queen. Pycelle does so anyway and she later confronts Tyrion about the plans.

Tyrion, Bronn , and Timett burst into Pycelle's chamber while he is in bed with a prostitute.

Pycelle denies telling Cersei, but Tyrion explains that he has implicated himself because he was the only one aware of the plan to approach the Dornish.

Tyrion asks how long Pycelle has been spying for Cersei and Pycelle claims that he has been loyal to House Lannister since the days of the Mad King.

Tyrion then tells Bronn to cut of Pycelle's beard because he doesn't like it. Tyrion brings up his betrayals of past Hands of the King and suggests that he poisoned Jon Arryn.

Pycelle denies poisoning Arryn, but admits that he was aware that Arryn knew of Cersei's incest. Tyrion accuses him of letting Arryn die as a threat to the Lannisters and Pycelle does not deny this.

Tyrion then orders Pycelle confined to the black cells and gives Daisy a coin for her services.

He then gives Daisy an additional coin after seeing how much of a struggle the supposedly frail Pycelle puts up. Tyrion agrees to release Pycelle, but refuses to let him return to the small council.

Prior to the Battle of the Blackwater , Cersei requests a supply of the anxiolytic and poison Essence of Nightshade but will not say why she wants it.

She almost uses it to poison her son Tommen when she believes the battle is lost. She is stopped just in time by the arrival of her father, who announces that they have won.

Pycelle visits the recovering Tyrion and gloats that he is no longer Acting Hand of the King since his father, Tywin, has returned to the city.

Later, during a court session to honor Tywin and Littlefinger, Pycelle and Cersei make a show of convincing King Joffrey - who announces his desire to marry Margaery Tyrell - to set aside his betrothal to Sansa.

Pycelle informs him that he spoke to the new High Septon and that the latter approves of breaking Joffrey's betrothal to Sansa.

The reinstated Pycelle attends a meeting of the small council, now held at the Tower of the Hand. Tywin tasks Littlefinger - recently made Lord of Harrenhal - with offering a marriage proposal to the widow Lysa Arryn.

Pycelle adds that such a marriage would make Petyr acting lord of the Vale. After Tyrion notes that Petyr's departure would leave the crown without its Master of Coin just when a royal wedding is at hand, Tywin informs his son he will become the new Master of Coin - a "demotion" considering Tyrion's previous post as Acting Hand of the King.

Pycelle heartily and mockingly supports the Hand of the King's decision. Pycelle is present at the wedding between Tyrion and Sansa held at the Great Sept of Baelor, standing along with the "Lannister side" of the attendants.

He attempts to refrain himself from laughing when Tyrion is unable to cloak Sansa without her sinking to his height.

Pycelle later attends the wedding feast, where he flirts with multiple handmaidens of the court, and becomes agitated when Tyrion offends Joffrey's manhood before he and Sansa leave the feast.

At a small council meeting, a gleeful Joffrey orders Pycelle to send a letter thanking Lord Walder for his service and demanding the head of Robb, so he can give it to Sansa at his wedding.

After Tyrion, whom Joffrey calls a "little monster", notes that monsters are dangerous and Kings are "dropping like flies", Pycelle angrily states that Tyrion should apologize immediately as his comment is "disrespectful, unacceptable and in bad taste".

Tywin dismisses the still angry Joffrey and commands Pycelle to give him some Essence of Nightshade to "help" the king sleep.

He is quick to carry out the Hand's orders. Pycelle is present during the breakfast before Joffrey and Margaery's wedding, and stands with the Lannisters in the Great Sept of Baelor during the ceremony.

At the feast, following Margaery's announcement that all leftovers will be given to the poor of the city, he harasses a young woman but is cut short by Cersei, who commands him to go to the kitchens and make sure all the remaining food is instead given to the dogs in the royal kennels.

When Pycelle protests that this is against Queen Margaery's command, Cersei angrily tells Pycelle she will have him fed to the dogs if he does not.

He is back in his seat next to Varys when the dwarf mummers do a reenactment of the War of the Five Kings , much to his amusement.

Minutes later, he witnesses Joffrey's death by poisoning. He is one of the first to bow before his new king. During Tyrion's trial for regicide , Pycelle is called as a witness for the Iron Throne.

He also concludes that the poison used to assassinate Joffrey was a rare poison called " the strangler ". Pycelle reveals his evidence; the necklace that Sansa wore to the wedding, which shows residue of the poison.

The effects are horrific and Ser Gregor's wounds are putrefying and creating a terrible stench. Pycelle says that he is beyond any hope of recovery, but Qyburn insists to Cersei that he can save him using less orthodox methods.

Pycelle chaffes at his suggestion, stating that arrogance like that is what led to Qyburn's expulsion from the Citadel , for experiments that were both dangerous and "unnatural".

Cersei, who wants to save the Mountain from death, orders Qyburn to do whatever is necessary and tells Pycelle that it's no longer his laboratory.

Pycelle leaves angered. Tywin is murdered by Tyrion, following his escape assisted by Jaime , who flees Westeros assisted by Varys.

At Tywin's wake, Pycelle offers his condolences to Cersei, stating that he never trusted Varys. However, she completely ignores him due to the shock of seeing Lancel as a Sparrow.

He later attends a meeting of the small council, Pycelle offers to fill the vacant position of the Hand of the King, but Cersei rejects his offer.

He is also outraged when Cersei announces that Qyburn has been named the new Master of Whisperers. Pycelle is present during the wedding ceremony of Tommen and Margaery.

Later, Pycelle and the rest of the small council listen to the High Septon demand the arrest of all members of the Sparrows and execution of the High Sparrow.

When it is brought forward that the Septon's demands come from being assaulted in a brothel, Pycelle due to his own philandering ways defends the Septon and insists "a man's private affairs ought to remain private.

Pycelle is at the meeting of the small council when Mace Tyrell departs to negotiate the crown's debt with the Iron Bank of Braavos.

He bitterly remarks that the small council is growing smaller everyday, to which Cersei states that it is not yet small enough, highlighting the tension between the two.

After Cersei's walk of penance for adultery with Lancel, her hair cut and stripped naked, from the Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep, Pycelle - like her uncle, Kevan - glares sternly at her, in contrast to Qyburn's fawning.

His expression of disgust deepens as Qyburn shows unnecessary familiarity in comforting the Queen. He is also shocked at the introduction of Gregor Clegane as a knight of the Kingsguard , who remains hidden behind the helmet, but with a monstrous structure clearly visible.

The new Hand of the King Kevan conducts a meeting of the small council along with Olenna Tyrell , when Pycelle starts rambling about Qyburn's work on restoring the Mountain as an abomination referring to him as "the beast".

Cersei and Jaime walk into the room, opting to join the proceedings, followed by Ser Gregor himself. After Kevan states his objection to the two of them being there, Jaime counters by saying he has a seat on the council as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

Cersei then orders the Pycelle to vouch for her brother's presence which he reluctantly does so; stating a precedent existed due to Ser Gerold Hightower being on the council in the same position under the Mad King.

When Pycelle began to object to Jaime's presence afterwards, the Lord Commander interrupted him by bringing a chair to his side of the table and slammed it down.

Kevan, Mace and Olenna quickly leave the hall, whereas Pycelle cowers past Ser Gregor who ominously looks back at Pycelle.

Pycelle later counsels Tommen concerning the Sparrows and Margaery's imprisonment, but is stopped by Cersei. Despite Pycelle's protests, Cersei coldly orders him to leave.

He defiantly questions her authority against that of Tommen's. Tommen then thanks him in an official but innocently frustrated manner, signaling his departure.

Pycelle then respectfully bids adieu to Tommen and coldly brushes past Cersei, clearly outlining the antagonism between the two. When Tommen outlaws trial by combat, Pycelle is seen advising the king before the announcement, remaining close by during Tommen's speech.

Tommen reveals that Cersei's trial will not be dependent on a trial by combat, dashing her hopes of escaping justice.

He exits the throne room quickly afterwards, avoiding Cersei, now clearly allied with Kevan, retaining his support for House Lannister despite the downfall of Cersei.

However, Cersei is later told by Qyburn that they could triumph due to new information from his little birds. Qyburn arranges the assassination of Pycelle, apologizing before he is stabbed to death.

Before Cersei's trial, one of the little birds is sent to Pycelle, asking him to come to advise the king. When Pycelle comes, there is only Qyburn waiting for him as the king is being kept in his room.

Grand Maester realizes that something is wrong and wants to leave, but Qyburn calls in his little birds. Breaking his act he shows unexpected speed for a man his age knocking the first little bird to reach him aside easily before being overwhelmed by their numbers.

They knock him on the ground while stabbing him multiple times and kill him. Pycelle is regarded as a cowardly, subservient and extremely sycophantic man by most people, and it is proven that he is so.

He is potentially joint in responsibility for the Sacking of King's Landing, as he persuaded the Mad King to open the gates to the capital and allow the Lannister forces to enter and rampage through the city.

Pycelle remembers several other rulers, and even remarks to have known Aerys Targaryen before the latter became a psychopathic pyromaniac.

Pycelle is viewed by Jaime Lannister as "a grey sunken cunt" meaning that he is unpopular amongst most people. He does not appear to have a strong relationship with the other Lannisters, as he is joined in hating and discriminating against Tyrion for his disfigurement and short stature.

Pycelle, despite his extremely frail and absent-minded outlook, is in his own way dangerous and surprisingly intelligent and agile, possessing a certain low cunning that other people overlook.

He is also firmly opinionated, rightly believing that Qyburn's methods are highly unethical, and refers to the latter in diabolical terms.

Pycelle is capable of arrogance and cowardice, shown by him desperately blaming Varys when Tyrion accuses him of betraying him to Cersei.

In public, he appears to be clumsy, senile and possessing a constant stammer. When in private, or in the presence of the likes of Tywin Lannister, Pycelle shows that he is actually feigning the stammer in an attempt of being unpredictable.

He admits to Tywin that he is ambitious and simply wants to outlast his opponents. However, he is not above being a hypocritical coward, claiming that he serves the Lannisters when he did not hesitate in prosecuting Tyrion.

He took the latter incident on an unnecessarily personal level, voicing his belief that his previous arrest by the Imp was unjustified - when, in actuality, it wasn't.

The position of Grand Maester is usually held by the preeminent member of the entire order of maesters, often a senior member with many decades' worth of accomplishments to his name.

As a result, they are often older men and thus don't tend to spend a very long time in office before they reach the end of their lives.

It is therefore unusual that Pycelle was selected as Grand Maester at only 42 years old, and has thus had the uncommonly long tenure in office of over forty years though in the centuries-long history of the maesters, such things are not entirely unheard of.

The reason Pycelle was selected at such a young age is because the last three Grand Maesters before him were old men who died in rapid succession: the first two each died under a year after taking the office, and the third died of a chill before he even reached King's Landing.

In frustration, it was decided to select a young and healthy man as the new Grand Maester. Though Pycelle has no hair left on top of his freckled scalp with just a wispy ring of hair around the sides, he has a long white beard which he has been growing for decades and is very proud of.

He strokes it when giving the impression that he is thinking or considering a weighty issue.

He tends to Ser Jaime Lannister 's badly infected stump, the result of Locke chopping off his right hand. During this time, Jaime notices that Qyburn is not a maester because he isn't wearing a maester's chain of office.

Qyburn acknowledges this, explaining that he was stripped of his chain by the Citadel and thrown out of the Order of Maesters for conducting experiments which they felt were too "bold".

Qyburn initially intends to amputate part of Jaime's arm, but Jaime begs him not to, even threatening to kill him. Qyburn agrees to instead resort to removing the infected flesh, warning that the process will be painful and likely require milk of the poppy , but Jaime, worrying that Qyburn may still amputate his arm, refuses.

Qyburn straps Jaime's arm to the chair and starts the painful procedure. Qyburn volunteers to join the party escorting Jaime back to King's Landing.

Lord Bolton theorizes that the former maester is doing so in the hopes that Tywin Lannister will force the Citadel to restore his chain, though Jaime shoots it down by sarcastically quipping that Tywin will make Qyburn Grand Maester if he grows Jaime a new hand.

After leaving Harrenhal, when Qyburn checks on Jaime's healing stump, Jaime notes that Qyburn's work is far superior to that of Grand Maester Pycelle and asks why the Citadel removed his chain.

Qyburn tells him that it was for performing experiments on living humans in order to learn more about their anatomy and justifies his actions by noting that he used the information he gleaned from them to save lives.

Jaime briefly mocks Qyburn, who shoots back at Jaime for the countless lives he's taken, though Jaime notes that he saved the population of King's Landing from the Mad King.

When Jaime then asks Qyburn about Brienne , he states that her father offered Locke a fair ransom of three hundred Gold Dragons , which Locke refused to accept due to a previous lie of Jaime's that Brienne came from a wealthier family than she really did.

Qyburn then accompanies Jaime and Steelshanks back to Harrenhal when Jaime blackmails Steelshanks into helping him rescue Brienne.

As they enter the city, Qyburn is visibly awestruck by its splendor. Cersei has a gilded prosthetic hand forged for Jaime, and Qyburn personally fits it on him.

Cersei voices her gratitude to Qyburn, who then ingratiates himself with the queen by aiding her in other matters. After Gregor Clegane is seriously wounded during his fight against Oberyn Martell , Qyburn and Pycelle theorize that Oberyn had coated his spear in manticore venom , causing Clegane's wounds to fester and leave him in agony.

Pycelle tells Cersei that Clegane is likely doomed, but Qyburn states that he may be able to save him using more unorthodox means, even though Clegane once nearly killed him at Harrenhal.

Pycelle snorts that Qyburn is not even a maester and reminds Cersei that he was expelled from the Citadel for conducting "dangerous" and "unnatural" experiments.

Cersei, remembering Qyburn's success with Jaime's stump, responds by dismissing Pycelle from his duties - and his laboratory. Cersei then gives Qyburn permission to do anything he can to save Clegane and to come to her should he need anything.

Qyburn warns the queen that the process he intends to put Ser Gregor through may "change him", but when she is satisfied that it will not affect his strength, she instructs Qyburn to carry on.

Qyburn is at Cersei's side when she confirms that a head brought to her by two bounty hunters does not belong to her brother Tyrion.

Qyburn asks for the head for use in his research. Later on, at a meeting of the small council , Cersei appoints Qyburn as the new Master of Whisperers to replace Varys.

Grand Maester Pycelle protests vehemently given Qyburn's outcast status, and Kevan Lannister denounces Qyburn as a sycophant and Cersei as a power-grabber.

Qyburn is present at a small council meeting when the High Septon demands the execution of the High Sparrow after his followers attack him.

Qyburn informs the council that the High Septon had been at Littlefinger's brothel. Later, Qyburn kills a rat as part of an experiment when Cersei enters his laboratory, giving him a message that she wants sent to Petyr Baelish.

Soon after Cersei leaves, as Qyburn writes, Gregor begins shaking under the blanket, but Qyburn shushes him calmly. Qyburn is at the meeting of the small council when Mace Tyrell departs to negotiate the crown's debt with the Iron Bank of Braavos.

He also informs her that King Tommen has become despondent following Cersei's arrest, and that he refuses to eat or see anyone. He suggests that she can simply confess to the charges and plead for mercy, subtly warning her that if there is a trial, the Faith will not wait for physical evidence to reach a verdict, only what they simply believe to be true, but she initially refuses.

Finally, just before leaving her, he informs her that "the work continues," referring to his experiments on Ser Gregor Clegane. Eventually, Cersei confesses to her relationship with her cousin Lancel to the High Sparrow , who agrees to set her free on the condition that she perform a walk of atonement.

After Cersei enters the Red Keep following her walk, Qyburn hastily rushes to her side and throws a cloak over her naked body.

He then speaks to Cersei softly and reassuringly as he embraces her, attempting to soothe her. Pycelle looks upon the scene with disgust.

Qyburn remarks upon her poor state and bleeding feet. Qyburn then introduces the "newest member of the Kingsguard ," the 7-foot tall abomination he has been working on.

At his behest, the golden knight picks her up and they walk away together, further into the Red Keep so Qyburn can clean her up and treat her wounds.

In his laboratory, Qyburn continues to serve as Master of Whisperers by bribing a group of Varys 's little birds into his service with boxes of sweets.

When Jaime and Cersei arrive accompanied by Gregor Clegane, the children are unnerved by the Mountain, though Qyburn promises them Clegane is a friend.

As part of her revenge, Cersei asks Qyburn to bribe more of Varys's spies stationed in the other kingdoms, and he agrees to do so.

Accompanied by Qyburn and the Mountain, Cersei confronts the group. Lancel says she must be taken to the High Sparrow, however Cersei disregards what her cousin is saying.

Qyburn then watches as Gregor kills one of the sparrows. Later, Cersei, Qyburn, and Ser Gregor enter the Great Hall to find a large crowd gathered for a royal announcement, King Tommen then announces that Cersei and Loras Tyrell 's trial will be held in the sept of Baelor on the first day of the Festival of the Mother , and then declares that trial by combat is now forbidden.

After the announcement Qyburn tells a shocked Cersei, who had been planning on calling a trial by combat with Gregor as her champion, that his little birds have been investigating an old rumor that she had told him about, and that the rumor was found to be much more than a rumor.

Qyburn has his spies create leaks in the barrels containing the wildfire, then has them place candles in the middle of the resulting puddles, which slowly burn towards the wildfire.

Qyburn also has Pycelle assassinated by his spies so as to consolidate Cersei's power. Qyburn is present when Cersei holds court with Euron Greyjoy.

When Lord Randyll Tarly asks about how Cersei is going to deal with Daenerys Targaryen 's dragons , Qyburn tells the lords that he has been working on a solution.

He later takes Cersei down beneath the Red Keep to show her his new modified scorpion to kill one of Daenerys's dragons, inviting her to test it on the skull of Balerion , the dragon Aegon the Conqueror used to unite the Seven Kingdoms, and forge the Iron Throne.

Cersei tells Ellaria and Tyene that Qyburn managed to ascertain that they had poisoned her daughter with the long farewell. Cersei kisses Tyene with the long farewell and Qyburn gives Cersei the antidote.

Cersei confers with Qyburn, who assures her the poison will mean certain death for Tyene, but how long the poison will take to kill depends largely on the strength of the victim's constitution.

Qyburn and the others then leave a distraught Ellaria to mourn with her dying daughter. Qyburn's scorpion is used in Battle of the Goldroad , when Bronn fires it into Drogon 's shoulder.

It succeeds at injuring Drogon enough to make him land. Angered, the dragon destroys the weapon with dragonfire shortly after. Upon Jaime's return to King's Landing and his secret meeting with Tyrion, Qyburn reveals to Cersei that she is pregnant.

She dismisses Qyburn after Jaime walks into the room, allowing Cersei to reveal the good news to her brother in private. Qyburn is present at the meeting at the dragonpit , which he helped Cersei organize.

He comes forward after Sandor Clegane begins cutting up the captured wight presented to Cersei, reaching for the wight 's severed arm, and examining it with genuine curiosity, although even he seems somewhat unnerved by it.

Qyburn gives the hand to Jon Snow , who then burns the wight's hand to reveal one of its weaknesses. Qyburn remains Cersei's Hand of the Queen.

As she watches the Iron Fleet returning to King's Landing with the Golden Company , Qyburn informs her that he has received word the Night King 's undead army has breached the Wall and invaded the North.

Cersei's response is a dismissive "Good". Qyburn informs Cersei that thousands of people have accepted the offer of refuge in the Red Keep against the invading Daenerys Targaryen.

He later negotiates with Tyrion outside the gates of King's Landing , unsuccessfully requesting the unconditional surrender of Daenerys's army.

When Drogon starts ravaging King's Landing , Qyburn convinces Cersei to flee Red Keep as it is unsafe and are saved by Gregor from the falling debris while fleeing.

They are confronted by the Hound who slays all the surviving Queensguard and wants to fight Gregor, who also wishes the same.

Qyburn orders him to obey his Queen, when she demands that Gregor continues to protect her, but Gregor simply picks him up and smashes him into a crumbled wall, cracking his skull and spurting blood, before throwing him head-first into sharp debris that destroys the back of his head, killing Qyburn.

He lay there dead while Cersei walked past him and the Cleganes commenced their battle. Externally, Qyburn appears to be an extremely harmless, polite and serene old man - he behaves calmly and patiently around everyone he meets, even if they do not have a good impression of him.

Jaime viewed him as an "odd little man" and didn't entirely trust him, even when Qyburn operated on the wound left by his severed hand.

Qyburn has proven himself to be, in his own right, highly intelligent to a fault, so much that he was the only one who knew a way to save Ser Gregor Clegane after he was savagely wounded by Oberyn Martell during their fateful duel in the trial by combat.

When Qyburn expressed that he knew a way of saving Gregor, he did so without bragging, instead that it was a matter of fact, which Pycelle interpreted as arrogance and pride.

Qyburn is, at the same time, extremely secretive, not truly revealing the methods he used to save the Mountain, instead expressing that the process would change Gregor, but not weaken him, and make him supremely obedient to Cersei.

Qyburn doesn't seem to express any outward disdain towards Ser Gregor for almost killing him at Harrenhal, but then again Qyburn rarely expresses disdain for much of anything - Qyburn goes so far as to call Gregor his friend while the man is undergoing his experiments.

It is therefore unknown whether Qyburn suggested he experiment on Ser Gregor out of revenge or if he simply did so in the interest of his constant pursuit of knowledge.

In spite of Qyburn's soft and calm exterior, he is potentially a very dangerous man because of his secretive, ruthless and unethical methods.

The Citadel once expelled Qyburn on the basis that the experiments that he enacted were unnatural and unacceptable, which Qyburn deemed foolish.

Pycelle scorns Qyburn for this, naming him an embarrassment to the Citadel. Qyburn maintained his loyalty to Cersei and carried out any task she set for him, but it is unspecified if he had personal reasons or if he was simply loyal to Cersei.

Qyburn was quick to end the interference of Pycelle in Cersei's plots by having him assassinated by his little birds. In spite of this, Qyburn expressed that he himself didn't have any personal grievances towards Pycelle and even told the old man that the necessity of murdering him pained Qyburn - this shows that Qyburn does not have sadistic or murderous intentions, but simply saw the act of killing the old Grand Maester as utterly necessary to consolidate Cersei's power.

However, none of these factors prevented Qyburn from having a look of cold satisfaction on his face as he watched his little birds overwhelm Pycelle.

This satisfaction was also shown when he witnessed Gregor Clegane ripping a man's head off during a showdown with the sparrows, showing that Qyburn is capable of taking satisfaction from his work and his actions.

In terms of how efficient he is as Cersei's right hand man, Qyburn is actually impressive in that he hasn't changed loyalties at all since rising to this position; he has striven to serve Cersei's interests, good or bad, to the end, and notably is the first to comfort her in the aftermath of her walk of atonement.

He has proven also that he is surprisingly resourceful in his own right: His scorpion is, however briefly, a good asset to Cersei's war against Daenerys Targaryen, managing to severely injure Drogon, who is ultimately able to destroy it.

Qyburn's curious and clever nature is also shown when he is actually intrigued by the sight of the wight brought to the Dragonpit, calmly observing the severed hand of the creature.

Despite this, he is shown to have a great talent for healing, such as being able to clean the highly infected stump of Jaime Lannister without having to amputate his entire arm.

Qyburn also has an exceptional knowledge of the human body, owing to his years of experimenting on living people at the Citadel.

It seems as though Qyburn possesses the magical ability to raise and manipulate those from the dead, defying the natural boundaries between life and death.

Qyburn never met Robb Stark, nor was he imprisoned while staying at Harrenhal, and he never met Gregor Clegane until after the latter's fight with Oberyn Martell.

Qyburn is rumored to practice black sorcery and necromancy. Despite his horrific experiments, Qyburn has a very kindly, fatherly appearance - Cersei thinks he looks like some little girl's image of her favorite grandfather.

Qyburn fell in with the Brave Companions at some point, who had been hired by the Lannisters and were based around Harrenhal.

When Roose Bolton leads the eastern half of the Northern army to advance on Harrenhal they betrayed the Lannisters to side with Bolton, and remain at Harrenhal.

This entire subplot was extensively condensed, so that Robb's entire army goes to the Westerlands, then to Harrenhal, instead of splitting into two groups one commanded by Robb Stark, the other by Roose Bolton.

The Brave Companions were also condensed from being a sellsword company to just a particularly vicious group of Bolton soldiers. In the novels, the Brave Companions are fond of cutting off the hands and feet of their prisoners so Qyburn has become quite skilled at treating such injuries.

Qyburn treats Jaime's festering stump as in the TV series. The chapter is told from Jaime's POV, which explains that the main reason he refuses to take milk of the poppy is because he fears that if he allows Qyburn to render him unconscious for the surgery, he will break his word and amputate the rest of his right arm instead of just the gangrenous parts.

Qyburn's treatment works quite well and he manages to save Jaime's right arm from the gangrene, and then travels to King's Landing with him.

In the beginning of the fourth novel, Qyburn is introduced to Cersei. He tells her openly why he was expelled from the Citadel, and she is quite pleased to hear he has fewer moral restraints than Pycelle.

She promises to finance his research and provide him with human subjects for his inhuman experiences, but warns him that he must be discreet - otherwise, he shall be granted a painful death.

Later she gives Qyburn a title of lord, despite Pycelle's objections that a maester cannot hold a title - let alone a disgraced maester. When treating Gregor Clegane, Qyburn theorizes that Oberyn had adulterated the manticore venom on his spear with sorcery; thickening it in order to slow its progress through the veins towards the heart, dragging out Gregor's agony.

However, Pycelle is killed anyway, not by Tyrell men but by Lord Varys, who removes both him and Kevan to ensure they cannot repair the damage Cersei had done to the kingdom and the Lannister-Tyrell alliance.

Kevan is killed in Pycelle's room, because he was doing too good at restoring the king's peace. Kevan and Pycelle's death will also provoke Cersei's madness and paranoia towards House Tyrell and many other enemies at court.

In the television series, Cersei grows more and more weary and annoyed with feeble Pycelle, who's not loyal to her at all, due to his tendence to serve competent rulers, while Cersei gives the most important duty to the despised Qyburn.

After having been imprisoned by the Faith , with her trial, which she would likely lose.
